"Difference: Anatomy Of Stone" 2025, Installation & Short Movie

“Difference: Anatomy of Stone” offers a perspective to deeply look at stones and think about entities with their environment based on the idea of ‘non-organic life’.

It was produced by artist Volkan Dincer in Ogaki, Japan in 2025 with the research and production support from Institute of Advance Media Arts (IAMAS) and IC Department at University of Arts Linz within the BIP Critical Data course.

Stones keep the energy coming from the sun in the day time as thermal energy, it makes stones an ancient power storage. With sunset the heat inside the stone starts to move out through the stone. Peltier modules on the stone surface harvests electric energy during this thermal energy flow which powers an LED bulb until there is no temperature difference between the stones and their environment, then the light on the stone turns off. A small bulb, as an implant, is a sign of life, it makes the stone similar to any organism that collects, transforms, and consumes the energy in their metabolism. For stones, metabolic process follows the day and night that gives a circadian rhythm to stones.
